Qi circulates in the body through 12 meridians which connect the body’s surface to the internal organs. Acupuncture is performed by inserting fine sterile needles into specific points on the meridians to alleviate energetic imbalances or blockages. It promotes the flow of Qi and blood to areas for deficient conditions and reduces the flow for excess conditions.
The World Health Organization recognizes many conditions which may be treated by acupuncture. Some of these conditions include:
- musculoskeletal problems & pain management: neck & back pain, headaches, sciatica, arthritis
- stroke recovery
- chronic illness: asthma, allergies, skin conditions, diabetes, digestive problems, hypertension, fatigue
- mental-emotional issues: insomnia, stress/anxiety, addictions, depression
- gynecological issues: menstrual problems, menopause, PMS
Other modalities used in TCM include: Acupressure, Massage, Cupping, Moxibustion and Diet Therapy.
Acupressure
Acupressure is a technique where the practitioner applies gentle but firm pressure with their fingers to specific points on the meridians to promote the flow of Qi. Acupressure is used to release energy blockages in the channels and to restore balance to body, mind and spirit.
Massage
Also known as Tui Na in Chinese Medicine. This type of massage uses the theories of Chinese Medicine, stimulating specific points and massaging certain meridians to restore normal function of the tendons, muscles and joints.
Cupping
Glass cups are heated creating a suction effect when placed on the skin. The glass cups are placed on the skin to promote the circulation of Qi and blood. Cupping removes stagnant or blocked qi or blood which may be causing pain in the body. It is also used to expel pathogens and reduce fevers.
Moxibustion
Moxibustion is performed by burning the Chinese herb Mugwort over specific acupoints. Moxibustion improves circulation, warms the channels and internal organs.
Diet Therapy
Chinese Medicine restores and balances the body using proper nutrition. Chinese Diet Therapy focuses on: balancing the intake of the five flavours (bitter, sour, sweet, spicy and salty); consuming certain quantities at specific times of the day; cooking food appropriately; and eating according to the four seasons.
